Bandelier
Bandelier National Monument is home to a large number of unusual Ancient Puebloan ruins. The rock here is soft volcanic tuff, and the ancients not only built their pueblos in the traditional way, by building walls from loose stone, but here they also dug into the cliffs themselves, creating additional rooms at the backs of their buildings. Sometimes all that's left are those hand-hewn caves, the pueblos themselves having tumbled down long ago.
